The Spirit of Mottainai 勿体無い👇

Curious about how I made this masterpiece?

Check out the FAQ below where I answer all the common questions!

I created this work in 2020 as part of my “Precious Metals and Other Exquisite Waste” collection.

I used bottle caps, metal lids, and acrylic paint on MDF.

YES…

I based the work around the concept of “Mottainai”. Which comes down to these two things:

One, respect natural resources. Two, don’t waste natural resources.

And this painting clearly shows that. It’s a reminder of how crucial it is to use our knowledge and technology to create a more sustainable future.

P.S. Want to know something extra cool?

Notice how the powerful red contrasts with the white bark?

That’s inspired by Shinto symbolism. Which highlights the cyclical nature of life and the interconnectedness of all things in nature.

This was my first time incorporating 3D elements into a painting. The tree physically comes out of the canvas. Which gives the work a powerful, almost lifelike presence.
